My last post detailed how I purchased an e36 as a daily driver/beater. Things have gotten out of hand since then.
In the last few weeks, I returned my Mazdaspeed3 from modded back to stock, sold the parts, and am waiting to sell it. I also bought an ls1/t56, stripped the BMW’s engine bay almost entirely, and bought the ls1 to e36 wiring harness.
American v8's aren’t really my thing, but the thought of getting another stock turbo 4 cyl and dumping another ~10,000 into to make it fast, then try to daily drive it again scared me. I also own that shitty Metro behind it now, which is motivation to get this thing done so I can sell it and get another DD.

The Metro is not shitty mister!!!
It’s a great car from the perspective that it was great at what it was designed to be... cheap, reliable, no frills motoring.

Swap in a Vortec 4200 in-line 6, and turbo it.

i can think of no better garage companions than an ls bmw and a metro. you’ll appreciate the bmw every time you get in from the metro, and the metro will save all the coin you need to have a perfect bmw toy
keep us updated on the swap

People around here don’t think that way. I said the same about the Mitsubishi Mirage and some people acted like I just kicked their dog.

You’re right, calling it shitty was a bit much, the doors are rusted out but it’s absolutely more car than I could have asked for at $500.

Sweet. I was literally just researching this swap last night when I was in bed. I’d love to do this with a de-stroked LS.

I think it would be a tough fit, the Atlas engine is designed to sit vertically, BMW sixes are leaned over quite a bit.

Many people don’t appreciate how compact a SBC is. In terms external dimensions, a 5.7L SBC is smaller than the 4.6L Northstar engine apparently and smaller than many DOHC V6 engines too.

I always forget that GM has a relatively recent straight-6. I wish they’d put it in more things.

Yup... great picture. Those overhead cams take up a lot of extra space.
It’s as big as a big block engine in terms of width. Here’s a SBC 350 vs a BBC 427:
And I found this picture that compares a Ford 302 Windsor to a BMW I6:

Oh another fun thing... Chevy 350 and Pontiac 350... same size right? Wrong!
And the Chevy LS3 vs the Ford 5L Coyote V8:

Wasn’t the size of the Pontiac engine a side effect of the same basic engine used from 301 all the way up to 455 cubic inches?

I think so.
